Moving from a small town to a big city can be daunting. Life is definitely bigger, faster, and more chaotic in the city. Don't get overwhelmed though. Keep reading to discover helpful tips on moving from a small town to a big city.
First of all, do your homework. You should begin by getting to know as much about your new home as possible before making the big move:
- Find out about the city's overall culture (I guarantee it's significantly different than small town culture)
- Check out the school systems
- See what to expect in the way of weather (does it rain often, how hot are the summers, how much snow should you expect in the winter, etc.)
- Look into public transportation for the area and find out how most people get around (cars, walking, subway)
- If possible, make a visit to the area before you move s...

When you're searching for a new home, one very important thing to consider is how safe the neighborhoods are, especially if you're a parent. When you're moving long-distance and can't spend much time visiting the area before you make the decision, it's difficult to determine what areas are safer than others.
Thankfully, there are a lot of websites available that offer crime rate information. So whether you already know the area you'll be moving to and just need to narrow it down to the right neighborhood, or you're moving to the area without a clue where to begin, here are some places to start:
The city's official website (look for .gov on the end). Look for links on these sites that are labeled with titles like: relocation, facts, statistics, community data or ne... Read More

What to Include in Your Vehicle Emergency Kit When you move with MoveBuilder, professional drivers make the move cross-country so you don't have to. For most people that means making a long-distance drive across the country in their own vehicle— a daunting task in some cases (but still leaps and bounds more enjoyable than driving a rental truck!) Because preparedness' is my middle name, I'm a strong proponent of preparing a vehicle emergency kit before you hit the road. Better to be safe than sorry, right? In fact, it's probably not a bad idea to have one in your vehicle at all times.
So what items do you really need? My advice is to visualize yourself stranded for 24-48 hours. What would you need? Keep in mind... Read More

Getting Involved in Your Community
Shows like ABC's Secret Millionaire impress me. If you haven't seen it, it's a show where self-made millionaires spend a week undercover in some of the country's poorest areas, and in the end reward the community's unsung heroes with a huge check. While I think it's admirable that the millionaires are so willing to help people who really need (and deserve) help, they're not the folks who impress me the most. The people serving their communities, regardless of whether they get helped out by a millionaire…those are the people who impress me. And the selflessness of these people made me think about ways I can get involved in my own community. I like the idea of serving other people, getting to know people with a similar vision, and taking part in what's going on around me. And that made me t... Read More

Our Picks for the Top 5 Household Budgeting and Finance Apps for the iPhone
One of my personal resolutions for the New Year was to become more financially organized, i.e. figure out where all of my money was going. I've mentioned before that I'm a proud iPhone owner, and like many iPhone owners, I'm obsessed with finding great apps. So, I've found some really good budgeting/household finance apps I'll share with you.
Mint.com iPhone App
This is a free app from the folks at mint.com, and I think you'll like it— it's one of my favorites. You can sign up for a mint.com account through the app or on the website. I personally preferred to sign up and add all of my accounts online…it just seemed easier this way. Speaking of adding accounts... Read More

If you've ever want to check out what a neighborhood, house, or street looked like before you got there, you're in luck! Google Maps allows you to take a look at a location without even traveling to the new location. This is especially handy if you're trying to check out a neighborhood. Of course, you'll still want to visit the area in person before moving, but this great resource lets you know what to expect before you get there— and may tell you whether it's even worth your time to make the trip.
We use this tool occasionally to determine serviceability. When there's a good street view picture, we can sometimes see if a driveway is too steep or a street too narrow to accommodate a moving truck.
Here's how to use Google Maps:
