Driving Your Personal Vehicle vs. Public Transportation

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics reports that 91% of people commuting to work use personal vehicles. So most likely, if you’re moving to a new city, you’ll be able to bring your vehicle along with you. But there are a handful of cities across the U.S. where having a car isn’t ideal. In New York City (which happens to have the largest subway system in the world), around 54% of commuters use public transportation instead of driving their own car. Incidentally, NYC is also the only city in the U.S. where more than half of all households do not own a vehicle. The number of households without vehicles in Manhattan is even higher.

But NYC isn’t alone; this infographic about public transportation shows how cities like Portland, Dal...

Must See Presidential Libraries

As you’re moving across the country (letting MoveBuilder drive so you can drive your own vehicle, of course) it’s such a fun idea to visit interesting places and great landmarks along the way. Make a vacation out of it! And what better place to visit during an election year than a Presidential Library! They’re not your typical library. You won’t be able to check out a book, but you will find some very cool displays and archives. If you’re a history buff, you’ll love it. They’re also great for school-age kids.

Thirteen past U.S. presidents have been honored with Presidential Libraries: The Ronald Regan Library in Simi Valley, CA; the Richard Nixon Library in Yorba Linda, CA and College Park, MD; the Lyndon ...

Important Presidential Election States

We’re right in the heat of it. Even though Election Day 2012 (November 6th) is still 8 months away, we know that what’s going on today will certainly make a difference on Election Day – especially in the swing states.

This infographic, depicting the Top Five Most Important States in the 2012 Presidential Election, gives a clue as to what states to watch out for as we get closer to the big day. If you live in one of these states, I have a feeling you’ve already been bombarded with advertising messages from candidates looking for a big win. We’re interested in hearing what its’ like!

National Fuel Prices | Where can you get the cheapest gas?

If I told you that fuel prices are up across the nation year over year, would you be surprised?  It’s what we’ve come to expect, right?  The last time gas prices dipped below $2 was November 2009, and before that, March 2005.  Sadly, I’m pretty sure if I saw $1.97 advertised on a gas station sign, I would assume it was a mistake and keep on driving.  HA!

Though fuel prices are up, there are some states where you’ll definitely get more fuel for your dollar.  This infographic, titled Find the Cheapest Gas, highlights the states where you can spend less money fueling up.

On a side note, I’m happy to see my home state on the list (even if it is the 4...

It’s a perfect infographic for people who are moving cross country; specifically if you’re going through or to Portland, Connecticut, Las Vegas, Los Angeles or New York. If you are, make sure to stop by, then tell us what you think. You’ll see unique sandwiches on the menu like: The Reggie; The Hot Lobster Roll; The Bobbi...

How much does it cost to rent office space in NYC?

Have you ever watched the show Selling New York on HGTV? I’m completely intrigued by it and without fail completely blown away by how much the homes cost. I think it comes from being an Arkansan, where you can purchase a kempt, three-bedroom, two-bath home for less than $150,000. Now, compare that to a three-bedroom, two-bath home in New York City (specifically Midtown) and don’t be surprised to see numbers that look more like $2.5 million.  It’s amazing what a little change in geography can do.

It’s probably no surprise that if the cost to purchase property in New York City is so much higher comparatively, that the cost to rent is too.  Renting a three-bedroom, two-bath home in Arkansas is usually less than $900/month, where the same home in Midtown could be as much as $10,000/month.  And what about opening a business? What type of price tag can an ent...

Best Places to Winter

Have you ever heard the term snowbird? It’s normally used to describe people who live in the Northeast, Midwest and Canada and head toward the sunshine when winter rolls around. They’re typically retirees, or folks who have the freedom to easily move from one location to another throughout the year.  You’ll normally find snowbirds in places like Boca Raton, Key West and Destin, FL; Las Vegas, NV; San Diego, CA; and Sun City, AZ.

Though I wouldn’t be in this camp, some people actually move toward the mountains when the snow starts falling (it is beautiful, so I’ll give them that).  So what’s the opposite of a snowbird?  I’ve searched, but can’t find a word to define these people...maybe ski bums?  I’ve read people who say they “winter” in one city and “summer” in another. Maybe that’s more appropriate.

Either way, the U.S. offers...

Top 5 Places to Move for Healthcare Jobs

I remember my grandpa always telling me, “If you want to know for sure you’ll have a job when you get out of school, do something in the health field or be a teacher.”  I think he may have been on to something.  While I didn’t follow his advice — I can’t handle hospitals and I’m a writer, not a teacher — I have several college friends who did, and finding a job has been anything but a problem for them.  This is especially true in the medical field.  You can read report after report exclaiming that healthcare workers are in high demand across the nation.  If you’re in college, trying to figure out what to do with your life, or you’re looking for a new career, healthcare is an excellent plan right now.

States with No Sales Tax | Infographic

2011 was Arkansas’s first time ever to offer a “Tax-Free Weekend.”  I loved it! It was a 48-hour period in early August where state and local sales tax was forfeited on the sale of most back-to-school items, like clothing, footwear, accessories, school supplies, etc. As far as I could tell from my family, friends, co-workers and neighbors, it was a huge success (here’s to having it again in 2012).  While it was an exciting weekend for a lot of the back-to-school shoppers I mentioned, I realize that there are some folks across the country who get to reap the benefits of tax-free shopping year-round.  I’m talking about the people living in the five U.S. states with NO SALES TAX.  Lucky. (*spoken in my best Napoleon Dynamite voice)

You might find it interesting that with the exception of Alaska, every U.S. state with no sales tax is surrounded by neighbors ...

Cities known for organic eaters

Did you know that U.S. sales of natural and organic products have grown from $1 billion in 1990 to $26.7 billion in 2010? That’s the case according to the Organic Trade Association’s 2011 Organic Industry Survey. The same survey also shows that organic food and beverage sales represented approximately 4 percent of overall food and beverage sales in 2010.

So why is it that eating organic has become such a trend?  We assume it’s because people like that organic foods meet such strict government standards—the USDA regulates how they’re grown, handled and processed. Organic products are free (or severely restricted) of chemical fertilizers, spray insecticides, herbicides, antibiotics, growth hormones, disease-preventing medications, growth-inducing medications, and food additives.

In order for foods to tout that a product is “100 percent organic,” it must be either comple...

Employee Relocation by Business Size | Infographic

Opportunities for Job Relocation
According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, the recession that started in December 2007 and ended in the summer of 2009 was the worst the US economy has experienced since the Great Depression.  It was bad news for employers and employees alike.  So it probably comes as no surprise that we saw a definite slow-down in the number of employee relocations that took place during that time.  The good news?  Things are changing.  Businesses are beginning to prosper again, resulting in new employment opportunities across the nation.

That means more opportunities for job relocation.

Take a look at this infographic on Employee Relocation Trends, just released in the MoveBuilder press room.  It shows the number o...

If you're considering a new job with a new company, or considering a transfer within your current company, and it involves a long-distance move, often one of the deciding factors is the relocation package.  Who's paying for your move?  When you consider the cost of a cross-country, full-service move, getting some (if not all) of it paid for can be the difference in a ’yes' or a ’no'.
