10 largest U.S. cities by population

It's that time again folks— It's FRIDAY. And you know what that means?  Time for a "Top 10 Friday" post!  I know…we're excited too. 

The 10 most populated U.S. cities

Over eight percent of America's population of almost 309 million lives in a few select places throughout the country.  Here are the 10 largest U.S. cities by population according to the 2010 census.

New York, NY
As you might expect, The City That Never Sleeps makes up most of this number.  New York, NY, home to 8.2 million people, makes up 2.72 percent of the U.S. population.

Los Angeles, CA
Los Angeles, CA, the City of Angels, has 3.8 million residents, and accounts for 1.24 percent of the U.S. population.

Chicago, IL
2.7 million people call Chicago, IL home.  Even with almost 3 million people, The Windy City's population only makes up 0.92 percent of America's total population.

Houston, TX
Space City is home to 2.1 million people.  Houston's population accounts for 0.73 percent of the U.S. population.

Philadelphia, PA
The City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia, PA also boasts over 1.5 million inhabitants.  The Philadelphia, PA population of 1.5 million makes up 0.5 percent of the American population.

Phoenix, AZ
1.4 million people call Arizona's Urban Heart home.  These 1.5 million people make up 0.52 percent of the U.S. population.

San Antonio, TX
The Alamo City has 1.3 million residents.  These residents make up 0.44 percent of the country's population.

San Diego, CA
While Silicon Beach has many tourists, 1.3 million people call it home year-round.  These 1.3 million people make up 0.42 percent of the U.S. population.

Dallas, TX
The Big D also makes up 0.42 percent of the U.S. population with its 1.2 million residents.

San Jose, CA
With a population of around 945,000, San Jose is the only Top 10 city with a population of less than 1 million residents.
