Haunted Hawaii - Hauntings, Sightings and the Paranormal around Hawaii

Hawaii's Top 10 Haunted Places

It's Top 10 Friday again and since Halloween is just around the corner, we're keeping with the ’haunting' theme.  I love this stuff!  Here's the thing about Hawaii— it isn't just for those seeking a vacation in paradise or an escape from reality. There is a very real and rich history that provides for Hawaii's rich culture and society that sometimes takes vacationers by surprise. And along with a rich history of war and take overs and independence is sure to bring a ghost story or two. This led us to wonder, how haunted is Hawaii and where are some of the places you would want to visit to find out.

Pearl Harbor – It is not surprising that the site of the attack by the Japanese that brought the United States into World War II is haunted. Located in the center of the harbor, Ford Island is home to many strange sightings, footsteps and stories.

The Dole Cannery Signature Theaters – Built on an ancient temple that met tragedy, many years ago a bus full of children crashed into the temple. Most of the passengers were killed. Today, many report hearing children's voices in the bathrooms and the theater.

State Capitol Building – Built next to the Kawaiahao Church, the capitol building is haunted by the ancient Queen Liliuokalani. The queen was buried in the church long ago and her soul hasn't found its "leina" or portal to the Other World. Her ghost is occasionally seen drifting through the capitol halls.

Sacred Birthstones – Just outside Wahaiwa is a small site that was the birthing place for Hawaiian royalty.  It is marked by a group of round, flat stones and emanates positive energy that can be felt by visitors. If the stones are moved, they always go back to their original places by themselves.

Waipahu Street – When Oahu was invaded by King Kamehameha I, so many were killed that the dead were lined up from Waipahu gulch to several miles away in Mililani Valley. Chanting, marching, and drums can be heard along the street and are said to be the Nightmarchers, the ghosts of the ancient Hawaiian warriors.

Hotel of Ancient Warriors – On the old castle ground of King Kamehameha, is the Kona Beach Hotel. Guests regularly hear footsteps, battle cries and chanting along the corridors. Some even claim to have seen the Nightmarchers. It is said that King Kamehameha's bones were buried beneath were the hotel sits.

Chaminade University – Once the site of a children's hospital during World War II, it is said to be one of the most haunted schools in Hawaii. Ghost of warriors can sometimes be seen inside of room 319 which once served as the soldiers' morgue. The wall in room 208 has the outline of a crucifix that hasn't been there for several years.

Highway 1 (H1) – Many ancient warriors met their death in the Koolau Mountains where the highway cuts through. While the tunnel was constructed, workman found bones and weapons of ancient warriors. Travelers now report ghostly sightings of warriors of Hawaii's past.

The Iao Theater – This popular theater is said to have a few resident ghosts and poltergeists that inhabit the dressing rooms. Visitors report the hearing voices, objects moving themselves and the feeling of being watched.

Sacred Heart Academy – The academy is said to be haunted by a nun who fell from the stairs behind the school chapel to her death. Current students report a chill in the air around the chapel and a cold hand touching them or the nun's cold breath in their faces. It appears that Sister is still minding her students.

Have you experienced any haunted places in Hawaii…or anywhere else for that matter?  We would love to hear your story!
