Housewarming Party Ideas

It's Housewarming Party Time!

I don't know about you, but I think that having a housewarming party is one of the most exciting things about moving into a new home. In fact, I'm getting excited just thinking about it (and I don't even know anyone who's moving). It's a great chance to show off the new home to old friends and family, and a perfect way to meet new neighbors.

Housewarming Party Invitations
Make your own or buy them…whatever you choose, get the invitations ready to send out at least 2-3 weeks in advance— people are busy these days.  If saving money is a big deal, and you've got computer-savvy friends and family, send an e-vite instead.  If you can do mailed invitations, one really cute idea I've seen is a postcard with a picture of the new house on the front, and directions/party invitations on the back. Just make sure you put the card inside an envelope so personal information only goes to the intended people.

While we're talking about invitations…the etiquette experts say it's ok to register for housewarming gifts, just don't mention it in your invitation. That becomes tacky. If someone asks if you're registered, it's ok to tell them, just don't advertise it.  The main point of the party should be to show people your new place, not a gift shower. But, if guests do bring gifts, graciously accept them— then send a thank you card.

Housewarming Party Decorations
Keep decorations simple. People are more interested in seeing your home than your decorations. Choices that accent the home's design are a great idea. The best way to do this is with a few candles or seasonal decorations.

Housewarming Party Food
Finger foods are the best kinds of food for encouraging people to walk around, check-out your home and mingle with the other guests— and that's what you want. So set up a table (or bar) with drinks and food trays.   Go Green and use your washable flatware, drink ware and dinner ware if you can.  If ease and convenience are more important, you can also provide disposable plates, cups and utensils.

Housewarming Party Fun
The main activity will be home tours, but if you've got friends and family who are up for a little fun, you can also have games available— icebreaker types are best. Here are some ideas:

  • Trivia – everyone loves to show off how much they know!  Ask questions about your new town.
  • Scavenger hunt – hide small items (party favors) throughout your home.
  • Memory – See who can list the most items from a specific room
  • Drawings – Give every guest a number when they come in and draw for door prizes later.
