How to Make a Good Impression on Your New NeighborsTake a deep breath and relax…the move to your new town is over! YAY! Now comes the fun part— meeting people and making new friends. Honestly, this is one of the things I love most about moving to a new place. And it probably goes without saying that if you're planning to make friends with your new neighbors, making a good impression is the key. If you've ever experienced "that" neighbor— the one who never speaks, doesn't mow, has trash and other miscellaneous junk strewn all over the place, and plays loud, thumping music late into the night— you know better than anyone how important it is to show the neighborhood that you're going to be one of the good ones. So, I've put together a few simple tips to help you make a good impression on your new neighbors. First, remember that a smile, a wave and an enthusiastic greeting can go a long way. Granted, when you're dealing with cleaning, unpacking and organizing, you may not feel like being cheerful, but it's worth it. Set the tone and let the established neighbors that you're open and approachable. Once you get everything put away, spend plenty of time in your new front yard, watering flowers, gardening, etc. Putting yourself out there helps make you more approachable and available for personal introductions. If you get the chance to greet them face-to-face, look them in the eye and shake hands…but don't violate their physical comfort and personal space. If you see your neighbors outside, once you've introduced yourself, try complimenting their landscaping and ask for advice on growing the same beautiful flowers in your own garden. This allows you to be nice without being too pushy. Remember that your home's curb appeal will affect the rest of the neighborhood. If you junk up your yard, and the other homes in your neighborhood are well-kept, you can count on having unhappy neighbors. Some neighborhoods actually have neighborhood associations that help control this. So do your part…take care of your yard, mow your grass, lose the weeds and keep trash and trash cans in an appropriate place. Avoid being a noise nuisance. Keep things like loud music, barking dogs, yelling children or other potentially noisy situations to a minimum. While there will be times when in may get noisy, be aware of the time— no regular late night thumping music or early morning lawn mowing. I think the overall best way to make a good impression on your new neighbors is to simply be a good neighbor. When you come across as warm, friendly and welcoming, you'll make new friends. Good neighbors are respectful neighbors who are considerate to those who live around them.
