Move from state to state
It probably comes as no surprise that when your task is to move from state to state, a few more things get added to your to do' list than you have with a cross-town move. Don't get me wrong, there's still a lot to do on a local move— like packing, loading, unloading, unpacking, completing a change of address with the USPS, switching utilities over, etc. But when you're moving to another state, there's a whole other list of things you'll need to take care of before, during and after your move. We've touched on moving state to state before in these blog posts: Moving State to State & How to Change Voter Registration When You're Moving Out of State— both with some great information to make the transition smoother. Here's another bit of helpful information to add to your moving file. This Move from State to State' checklist was designed to help you keep track of it all.
- Transfer Medical and Dental Records to your new dentist and physician. If you don't have a copy of your children's shot records, you'll likely need them for their new school or daycare. You can request a copy to carry with you. If you haven't chosen a physician in your new town, ask for a referral from your current doctor. Don't forget to make sure they accept your medical insurance.
- Transfer prescriptions to a pharmacy close to your new home or change the address for mail order prescriptions.
- Request a transfer of your child's school records to the new school district.
- Request a transfer of your pet's veterinarian records. If you haven't chosen a veterinarian in your new town, ask for a referral or take the records with you.
- Transfer or close your bank accounts. Many places of business will not accept out-of-state checks, and many banks charge fees for providing services (like ATM withdrawals) if you do not have an account with them. If you bank with a nationwide institution, you may be able to simply change your information and update your checks. If not, you'll likely need to choose a new bank.
- Transfer your auto and home insurance policies. Insurance laws, limits and coverage differ state to state. Don't forget to advise your insurance agent/company of your move.
- Get a driver's license in your new state (if you're planning to establish residency).
- Register and license your vehicle(s). Your license and registration should match the state where you are licensed to drive.
- Amend Trusts and Wills. Though amendments to trusts and wills are not required in every state, they are in some. Check to see what the rules are in your new state.
- Pay Income Taxes. Unless your previous job ended on December 31st, a state to state move normally means you will have to pay income taxes to both states. Don't forget come April 15th.
- Pay Property Taxes. Most states require that you pay personal property taxes on the personal property you own (car, boat, RV, etc.). Check the laws in your state.
This extensive checklist should cover most of what needs to be done when you move from state to state. If I've missed anything, feel free to leave comment and let me know…we'll add it to the list!
