Moving a Refrigerator

Tips for moving a refrigerator
Similar to moving a washer, you'll also need to prepare your refrigerator for moving before the MoveBuilder movers arrive to load.  So, no less than 24 hours before the crew arrives, you'll want to unplug the refrigerator and/or freezer, disconnect the water line, remove all of the items, clean out the refrigerator and defrost it.  The movers are not able to disconnect the water lines, so if you're unsure how to do it, your owners' manual should give good directions.

Why is it so important to prepare your refrigerator at least 24 hours in advance of your move? Several reasons, really…but the main reason is to protect your goods— not just the refrigerator, but everything.  A wet refrigerator is a great breeding ground for mold, which can spread quickly and cause problems when you're moving.  Getting the refrigerator completely cleaned out and dry before loading it into the moving truck reduces this risk greatly.

Now, if you're trying to decide if moving a refrigerator is the right thing to do, or if you should sell it with the house, ask yourself these questions:

• Will the refrigerator move through your home's doors without removal of the door(s) at both the origin and destination?
• Are there cabinet framing or enclosures that need to be removed before the refrigerator is moved out or in?
• Will the refrigerator door(s) need to be reversed at the new residence?  If so, is the door reversible?
• Will it fit in the space designed for the refrigerator at the new residence?
• Does the new residence have adequate waterlines for ice makers (if applicable)?
