Tips for Finding Cheap Hotel Rates

If you're moving long distance, it's likely that at least one nights hotel stay is in your future.  If it's a really long move…three or four. And, if you're trying to keep your moving cost to a minimum, I'm guessing you want to find affordable hotel rooms along the way.  Whether you plan for stops and make hotel reservations ahead of time, or book them as you go, it's always a good idea to compare rates!

So, here are some great tips, from folks in the travel industry, for finding the best hotel rates.

  • Look at travel discounters like Travelocity and Expedia. Although there's a consensus that you may not find the best prices here, you will find reviews that help make the decision easier.
  • Check with your travel clubs, like AAA and AARP. If you're not a member already, there's a fee to join, but membership comes with discount perks that may help with your travel cost.
  • Make sure to mention your age. That's if you or the guests traveling with you quality for a senior discount.
  • Check with your credit card company. Some credit cards have partnerships with hotel chains that offer discounted rates when you use your card for booking.
  • Become a Loyalty Reward Member. Often these memberships will come with good "deals", and you get points each time you stay at the hotel to work towards free hotel stays.
  • Call the hotel property directly. Not the 800 number. And don't be afraid to negotiate. Many times the hotel will offer last-minute specials if they aren't booked.
