Tips for Moving From a Small Town to a Big City

Moving from a small town to a big city can be daunting.  Life is definitely bigger, faster, and more chaotic in the city.  Don't get overwhelmed though.  Keep reading to discover helpful tips on moving from a small town to a big city.

First of all, do your homework.  You should begin by getting to know as much about your new home as possible before making the big move:

  • Find out about the city's overall culture (I guarantee it's significantly different than small town culture)
  • Check out the school systems
  • See what to expect in the way of weather (does it rain often, how hot are the summers, how much snow should you expect in the winter, etc.)
  • Look into public transportation for the area and find out how most people get around (cars, walking, subway)
  • If possible, make a visit to the area before you move so you can familiarize yourself with the surroundings
  • Learn where the police departments, fire departments, hospitals, banks, and grocery stores are located

You may find that having a plan and getting things in order ahead of time makes things easier.  If you can, have a job, a home, and insurance lined up before you make the move.  Then make sure you have emergency funds available when you arrive, just in case there are unforeseen expenses. Keep in mind that city-living tends to be more expensive than small-town living.  So, spend wisely, be frugal, and keep track of where your money is going.

Once you've made the transition from small town to big city, take time to soak it all in.  Don't be a tourist.  You don't have to see and do everything right away.  This is your new home now; instead of being overwhelmed by experiencing what the city as to offer immediately, take your time and do a little every day.

After you've moved, you'll also want to get involved in your community.  Look for things to do that you enjoyed in your former town, and incorporate them with the new activities and opportunities in your new city.  Try volunteering— big cities usually have a variety of ways for you to get plugged in.  These posts may also be helpful for you:  How to Find the Best Local Hot Spots When You're New in Town, How to Find a Gym in a New City, and Resources for Getting Involved in Your New Community
