What's the best way to lift boxes to avoid injury?
How to Safely Lift Boxes
If you've chosen MoveBuilder loading services, you won't have to worry about how to lift boxes…you're leaving it to experienced movers. But many folks decide to save money by doing the loading on their own. If that's you, before you start, you'll want to learn about the best way to lift boxes to avoid injury. Here are some tips:
- First things first, do a little stretching. Stretching the muscles before doing any activity can lower your chances of strain and injury.
- Check the weight of the box. Try scooting it with your feet or hands to test how heavy it is. Don't assume you can tell by the size of the box. A small box may be heavier than it looks if it's full of heavy stuff, like books or dishes.
- Know where you're going. How far are you taking it? If it's too heavy to carry the distance you need to go, use a dolly or get help. Make sure there's enough room to put it where you need it, whether you're packing it for the move, storing it, or unpacking it.
- Squat to lift and lower. Avoid bending at the waist, instead lift with your legs and keep your back straight.
- Use both hands to get a firm hold on the box.
- Stand up slowly, straightening your legs.
- Keep the weight as close to you as possible, between your shoulders and waist. Don't hold it out and away— this puts more strain on your back muscles. If the box is packed correctly, the weight will be distributed evenly when you pick it up. Otherwise, it may be heavier on one side and throw you off balance.
- If you need to turn, turn with your feet, not your body. Avoid twisting.
- Move slowly and carefully, don't rush and lose your balance.
- Wear non-slip shoes and avoid walking on slippery or uneven surfaces.
- Know your limits. Don't try to lift anything that seems too heavy. If it seems too heavy, it probably is. Get help from another person for the heavier loads.
- If you can't safely move heavy boxes on your own, and you don't have anyone to help you, there's always the option to hire a moving service.
